Everything you need to know about the paperwork for donating your car in RI.
When donating a vehicle in Rhode Island, it's essential to follow the correct title transfer procedures through the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Sign the title over to OceanState Donor, ensuring all required fields are filled in correctly. If you are not able to sign in front of a DMV representative, notarization is necessary.
After signing the title, the DMV must be notified of the transfer. You can do this by completing a Notification of Sale form. If you’ve lost the title, you can request a duplicate title from the DMV. Remember to check for any liens on the vehicle, as these must be cleared prior to the donation process.
1
Check Vehicle Title
Ensure you have the vehicle title and verify that it is in your name. Look for any lien holders and resolve them if present.
2
Complete Title Transfer
Sign the back of the title and fill in the necessary details for the transferee. Ensure all information is accurate to avoid delays.
3
Notarize if Required
If not signing in person at the DMV, arrange for a notary to witness and authenticate your signature on the title.
4
Notify the DMV
File the Notification of Sale form with the Rhode Island DMV after the vehicle has been handed over to OceanState Donor.
5
Handle Lost Titles
If the title is lost, request a duplicate title through the DMV. This process may take a few days, so plan accordingly.
6
Keep Documentation
Retain copies of all paperwork related to the donation for your records, including the donation receipt for tax purposes.
